Gemstone hardness and weight guide

Two tests a jeweller trusts: how hard a stone is to scratch, and how heavy it is for its size. This guide puts seventeen gem minerals on one scale using the US Geological Survey's figures.

Zircon is about 2.2 times Opal at the same measure. Specific gravity is how many times heavier a stone is than the same volume of water; the list is ordered by the middle of each published range. Hardness is on the Mohs scale.
